How common is it for a life insurance company to require a blood test?

I've never had to take one before but the company I am dealing with now requires one...is this normal?

It's very common. In fact, almost every carrier I work with requests blood work unless the amount of insurance applied for is very minimal or unless the proposed insured is a juvenile.
